Dr. D’Agostino is a celebrated research scientist who combined his neuroscience studies with his nutritional background – leading to many interesting conclusions. He helped discover how ketosis could prevent Navy SEAL divers from having seizures underwater. He was the only non-NASA member that worked on the NEEMO 22 crew – which spent 10 days deep underwater because it mimics the harsh conditions involved with space travel. He’s led many other scientific studies describing how a ketogenic diet aids with diseases like cancer, epilepsy, Type II diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's. And, he’s made his rounds on all the popular podcasts like Joe Rogan, Tim Ferriss, and has even hosted a TedTalk! Despite all his accomplishments, perhaps his most interesting discovery is finding the role ketones play in relation to fear and anxiety. In 2017, he published a scientific study for Frontiers. He gave rats exogenous ketones and then placed them in an elevated plus maze – which is basically a higher risk maze where the rats are on a catwalk and can fall off. Typically, plus mazes produce a fear-response in rats and they turn around and run back to safety in their cave but after giving the rats exogenous ketones, they found that it reduced anxiety behavior about 25-30%. So, if you suffer from anxiety problems or have trouble dealing with stress (which typically exacerbates anxiety problems), dialing down your sugar intake could make it easier to relax. Although the brain requires some glucose it really really loves being bathed in ketones. When you're in that state, you feel really sharp and focused...zero brain fog. It’s had a noticeable impact on Dr. D’Agostino himself – especially earlier in his career when he felt more anxious. Dr. D’Agostino is an exciting guest to have at the Keto Symposium. He’s dedicated over 10 years of his life to studying the ketogenic diet and has some of the most interesting stories to tell about it (which is part of the reason he’s been on all the top podcasts).
